Stress Awareness Month

In April 1992, the first ‘Stress Awareness Month’ 💭 was created and has been run annually since then to raise awareness and take action on our modern stress epidemic.

Stress is defined as a feeling of being overwhelmed, or unable to cope with either emotional or mental pressure, and up until 1992 this invisible struggle for many of us and our loved ones had been severely under acknowledged.

In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity
— Albert Einstein

One method of combating these feelings is to fight them with more positive feelings - constructive to your mental wellbeing. The term ‘Helpers High’ was first discussed in the 1980’s, and described the positive emotions experienced after doing something selfless for another person, or cause 😌.

Researchers have discovered lower levels of stress hormones in the bodies of individuals experiencing ‘Helpers High’. Other studies have found that when volunteering, or even just thinking about volunteering or giving back, the same areas of the brain are activated as either thinking about getting a reward, or experiencing pleasure in general 🧠! We’re also more likely to repeat volunteering because of how good it makes us feel when being involved or reminiscing about being involved.

If you’re looking to combat some of your own stress this month, or even looking to experience ‘Helpers High’ by volunteering to support some incredible Impact Organisations combating feelings of stress, being overwhelmed, or low mental health in general, why not look into some volunteering 💜?

Matchable offers a wide range of impactful employee volunteering opportunities that employees are able to weave through their working schedules. We understand the importance of volunteering, but also the importance of employee wellbeing.

This study found that a huge 79% of British adults in employment commonly experience workplace stress, which needs to not only be acknowledged, but also combatted. Being able to offer employees the opportunity to experience ‘Helpers High’, known for reducing the level of stress hormones in the body, can both combat workplace stress, but also can do so much for each individual employee's mental wellbeing in general. On top of that - your organisation will be giving back and volunteering their time to a range of the most innovative and impactful organisations and non profits around the world 🌎!
